SLIDESHOW 1
In recent years I have given a slideshow presentation entitled Valuable Information Straight from the Fish's Mouth to a number of fly fishing clubs around the country (a subject addressed in detail in my book Reservoir Trout Autopsies). The Covid-19 pandemic regrettably resulted in cancellations and I have decided not to restart my slideshows in order that I can devote my time, apart from fly fishing, to writing books, magazine articles and carrying out research into angling history (see my books on Dr Bell of Wrington and T C Ivens).

SLIDESHOW 1
Valuable Information Straight from the Fish's Mouth!
In Valuable Information Straight from the Fish’s Mouth I show what can be learned from performing autopsies and how the information gained can be used to make the correct choice of fly.
The talk consists of a selection of slides illustrating autopsies that I have carried out and photographed over the years together with some pictures of the natural creatures.
After each section the autopsies are followed by some suggestions of what fly might be tied on to replicate what the fish are taking.
These are the creatures which are discussed in detail.
-
Buzzer pupae
-
Buzzer emergers & winged adults
-
Buzzer shucks
-
Bloodworm
-
Daphnia
-
Damsels
-
Water bugs (corixae, shrimps, freshwater louse, snails, leeches etc.)
-
Fry & small fish
-
Sedge/caddis
-
Upwinged flies (olives, mayflies, caenis)
-
Terrestrial insects
-
Creatures trout avoid!
…and I also consider what to try if the fish are not feeding!
As a result of my findings I have come to the conclusion that what I call ‘suggestive representations’ of the food items are far more successful than what could be called ‘exact imitations’. That is, in itself, a very significant observation.
There are over 100 slides in the presentation and it takes around 60 minutes.
FEEDBACK:
"Just wanted to say Thank You for your presentation to Invicta. From the feedback and buzz from our members it is apparent that they found the talk both interesting and informative. It certainly went down well, and it is most likely that many will now be doing autopsies of their own."
Invicta Fly Fishers, Cambridge
"Thank you again for such an excellent evening last Thursday. From the feedback I know the members found your presentations very useful and informative."
Chiltern Fly Dresser's Guild
"I have had phone calls saying how interesting it was, so thank you very much for your input with it, I thought it was technically brilliant."
Leicestershire Fly Fishing Association
"We all really enjoyed your very informative talk, the chaps in my car on the way home were saying they never really appreciated the value of spooning until your talk. I think they are now converted! It’s a practice I will now continue with."
